Unity Health Toronto’s state of the art Simulation Program allows students, health disciplines and nursing professionals, researchers, administrators and physicians to practice skills in a safe, realistic learning environment using high fidelity Human Patient Simulators, Virtual Reality and task trainers. Health care simulation involves a range of activities that share a similar purpose: to improve patient safety and quality of care, provide interprofessional education opportunities, and increase the effectiveness and efficiency of health care services.
Our mission is to improve patient safety and quality of care by providing a safe learning environment to all patrons, interprofessionally and individually. We achieve this by offering quality simulation education and research opportunities, using a wide array of simulation modalities.
The Allan Waters Family Simulation Program (St. Michael’s Hospital site) achieved its first five-year accreditation by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada from 2014 to 2019, and has now been reaccredited until 2024. Accredited simulation programs are nationally recognized as leaders in simulation based learning and educational research. The Centre houses more than 2 million dollars in capital equipment and provides customized clinical training and educational sessions to more than 6000 internal and external healthcare professionals and students each year.
The simulation program is also actively building our faculty, curriculum and spaces at Providence Healthcare and St. Joseph's Health Centre. Within the last 3 years, we've built new simulation spaces at both locations to meet the growing simulation needs across the organization.
The simulation program is very excited to work with our clinical and administrative colleagues to grow simulation programming at Unity Health Toronto, with the goal of obtaining Royal College accreditation at all of our sites.
